where did rock and roll get its name?(draft)

The term 'rock and roll' has been used by sailors for hundreds of years. It refers to the rock,a fore and aft motion, and roll, a sideways motion, of a ship. The expression can be found in English literature going back four-hundred years, which always refers to ships and boats.
